Flashback: Giffords Interview on Target Map | Talking Points Memo

I am not surprised it came to this actually. As much rhetoric and hate being spewed in the name of being re-elected or just straight political warfare. As usual the public pays the price one way or another. I watched a few news programs this morning with round-tables of congressmen/woman asking for this to be a wake up to the American public and Washington D.C..

In many ways, the American public are not the ones who deserve a lecture here. It is those in Congress and the political landscape who over the years have adopted a "Get them before they get you" mentality when it comes to securing a seat in Washington. The Media for picking up on it and turning it into a ratings game, and finally those in society who are incapable of formulating an educated opinion of their own and are driven more by their ears and emotions as dictated by others (Politicians/Media). This is something that should be a wake up call for those individuals. I don't need an education on civility and a proper debate.

Our democracy is turning into a 3-ringed circus and very few are truly concerned about the growth and prosperity of America rather than their own political gains. For those who laud her, seriously, Palin specifically, needs to back off of her "Annie Oakley" political image and begin to learn and join a logical debate about the future of this country instead of inciting what can only be described as a counter movement to a democracy designed to represent, not convert or overthrow those of differing opinions.

You Get What You Get and You Don't Get Upset!

I love this little phrase I learned from my kids. It is used often in my house to explain the rational behind certain "less than favorable" outcomes in response to bad behavior. A means of demonstrating personal responsibility for their actions.

I'm not sure when this lesson of personal responsibility started to disappear in adults, but often these days we hear excuse after excuse after excuse of why things are not going our way, and how it is always 'their' fault, not ours. The economy is Wall Street's fault, the discord in Washington is [name the politician/party of choice here]'s fault or whatever.

The truth of the matter is, is that we in many ways have given up control over our lives, children, families and the decisions we make, simply because it is easier to blame someone else. With regard to the economy, it wasn't Wall Street that told us to go out and run up massive debt, take out a mortgage on a house that was more than we could rationally afford, buy into to all of the sales and specials without reading the fine print, but yet we blame everyone else for the negative impact on our lives. At what point will we wake up and realize that some of the fundamental lessons previous generations learned still apply like; In good times, always ensure you have savings built up (2~6 months worth of salary) AND DON'T TOUCH IT! This still amazes me that people live pay check to pay check. It is also a lesson it took me years to learn. You pay car insurance for not having an accident, why not pay yourself for insurance incase your career, or forbid your life has an accident?

Always have a back up plan. This was a very hard lesson learned when I was let go after 9 years from my previous company. I never expected it, so when the day came, I was completely unprepared. No resume, no network, no information, nothing. But if you ask me today, I will tell you that every single one of them are out there and completely up to date, just in case. I still have conversations with people who, for whatever reason feel there is no need to focus on those things for various reasons, the top being "I've been with the company too long to be let go" or "What I do is too critical to be cut." WAKE UP! Everyone is suspect to taking the axe. Why? The Once-Mighty Dollar!

With reagard to politics, it seems that we always do the same thing, we align ourselves with one Party based on what the candidate is told is the agenda for the party. Polls are taken, bullet points are written up and everything is regurgitated across the party line. Here is the thing, at what point do we begin to take responsibility and demand more from our government? We elect who sells the better message based on what is the hot topic of the day. That message unfortunately has been crafted, honed and wrapped in golden honey-dipped double-speak to make us feel like they are going to fix things immediately. Newsflash, the problems of today will take a hell of a lot longer than 4 or even 8 years to fix.

The same thing could be said about the Military and actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Are we all really naive enough to think that we are powerful enough to run in a country, kick their ass, then leave with everyone throwing rose petals at our feet in a matter of one or two years? Did we forget about the fact that to this day we still have a military presence in countries who we were at war with 70 years ago?

There are no quick fixes for anything in life. No short cuts, and everything has consequences. We have to stop expecting faster than the speed of light solutions or deals. Everything has a price, be it now or 5 years from now. You will pay in the end. Everyone is out for themselves and you have to protect yourself. Don't fall for the short term gain. It is the long-term planning that we should be demanding. I don't care if the employment numbers havent gone up in a month's time frame. Tell me where you are going to position us 5 - 10 years down the line for steady upward growth.

Politicians are quick to point out the fear in how our children and grandchildren will be living in the distant future. The scary thing is, they are right. But what is it that they are really working to do about it other than highlight it as a fear mechanism to get back in office? They spend more time blocking, fighting or debating endlessly just to make it to the next round of elections to hold on to their precious government benefits we so happily pay for. Just once, I would like to find a politician who is not towing the party line and has a true mind of their own with plausible solutions to our long-term stability and growth. Not even his/her own, but the ability to listen to his/her constituents who put them in office and fight for what WE want instead of spewing what is polled or heard on the campaign trail, or worse paid for by your neighborhood corporate lobbyist, just to get them back in office.

Anyhow, I think you see where I am going here. You were given two gifts, the gift of life AND the gift of choice. Why be in a rush to give that gift to everyone or everything around you through blame? That is exactly what we do when we allow external factors to dictate what occurs in our own life. We need to stop blaming everyone and everything else for your own problems and begin to take back the decisions in our lives and plan for our own security and future because I guarantee that no one else is going to do it for you.

Fire Congress Now!

I have lost all faith in Congress. At time when my retirement savings are losing thousands of dollars in the most recent economic crisis, I put my trust in the advice and recommendations put forth not by Congress or even the White House but in that of Hank Paulson the Treasury Secretary.

Part of the reason is that this is a man from Wall Street who understands the complexity of the issue at hand. For decades, he lived and breathed these financial systems. I also worked for a Wall Street Firm so I also somewhat understand the complexity of the numerous business types at play.

For these reasons, you will have to excuse me for putting the advice of Paulson over some wanky politician in Washington who is more concerned over his/her own popularity in the next election. This week has show a very sickening and dare I say juvenile dance between a still partisan Congress.

Here is what I believe many are struggling to understand. There are two views of the word "economy." the first is the presumed driver of the Republican claim that 90% of their constituents are apposed to bailing out these financial institutions. I do not disagree with this number because the economic view is one of Personal finance. Bank accounts, 401k, Savings etc. Of course no one wants to be left out of the cash giveaway.

The second view is that of the Financial "engine" of the economic markets. Things like Bonds, Stocks, Swaps, Credit Derivatives, Mortgage Backed Securities etc.. Things the average person on Main Street know not much about. This is what is sinking and if not corrected in the short-term will damn us all in the long-term

The only way I could explain this is the difference between the interior/ exterior of a car (your personal finances) vs. The Engine, Transmission or Catalytic Converter. The latter we don't know or care too much about, that is until it breaks.

I am not saying that it is a good thing to have to dump massive amounts of cash into the financial industry. What I am saying is that we need to perform triage now to be able to fix what is truly wrong with the system and Market-movers that put us all I'm this predicament.

Which leads me back to Congress. In stead of posturing or finger pointing across the isle, I would like MY Congress take a leadership role with the American people. I believe more people need to be educated on the whole economic infrastructure above and beyond their personal finances. Only then will the current situation make any sense. I am disheartened that members of Congress clearly do not understand this issue either, if they did, they might actually form an opinion and bring the truth back home to their constituents instead of simply saying "I'm doing what my voters want." Main Street may not have all of the facts to see the bigger picture.

Instead, the urgency of saving people's personal savings is being held hostage by the Political dance that is Congress. What I witnessed yesterday was both disheartening and to be frank just plain un-professional and self serving.

Obama Tech Policy Paper: Protect our Children

WhiteHouse-Tech.pngAs a Parent of two young children who have yet to figure out how to do anything with my computer other than to sneak up and punch keys while I am typing. However, the day will come soon when they are asking for a time-share deal on my hardware. This became evident to me after realizing that at my Daughter's Day Care they actually had a computer in the classroom for the children to "explore," opening another avenue that I will have to patrol as a concerned parent.
Protect Our Children While Preserving the First Amendment The Obama take on this concern is interesting. Going against the general Democratic belief that "Government" is needed to legislate problems out of our lives, Obama is yet again putting the parents under the spot-light for being responsibility for their children's exposure to undesirable content both in the media as well as on the web.

It has been my opinion that for far too long parents have relegated the duty of parenting to schools that are spread too thin and the ultimate baby-sitter, the television. When things go south they look to blame everything else but themselves. I will have to save that discussion for a different post.

One exciting concept is that offered by what is being called "Public Media 2.0." I am only going to assume that the 1.0 version of that was the boob-tube. Version two takes programming provided by the likes of the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) and other children's content providers and migrates it over to the web. The Problem is, it also introduces a whole new way of thinking in regard to how it is selected, rated, and managed. How would content be selected as part of the Public Media 2.0 effort? Would it have to be educationally based? Certified by the Department of Education? What would be the guidelines?

Here is an example of how tricky this can be:

When faced with a decision to put up Wonder Pets or Sponge Bob Squarepants, I always choose Wonder Pets because I feel Sponge Bob is more for entertainment than education. Thanks to the Mrs, TV is scrutinized and managed heavily in our household.

Maybe that one was too easy, here's another:

I was a bit disturbed and shocked by something my Daughter said within ear-shot of myself. She was in the other room and at the age of 3 and a half she said; "My Daddy's going to kill me!" All I could think about is her saying that in a public location and me being hauled in by some Child Services Division for Child Abuse! I immediately went to her and asked her what she said; to confirm my own ears. She repeated it word for word. I had to know where she picked it up from and she said; "from the Little Mermaid Daddy." Wow... Disney.

This is going to be tough. It would be so easy to somehow mandate the FCC to step into the Internet and attempt to regulate this, but everyone knows this is both impossible and would draw huge protests centered around the First Amendment. It would also put us in the realm of that which we are all so quick to criticize the Chinese Government for doing. Dare I say it? Censorship.

I am on board with this Policy's view that true responsibility has to begin where the "rubber meets the road." That is right here at home. Whether it is done with software made easy for the non-technical or through service agreements that providers offer to restrict certain non-child-friendly content through to the home which parents can sign up for. Myself, being in the IT Industry, I plan on implementing strict controls on my machines and leveraging any tools out there to assist me in making sure that I am on top of what my children are doing on-line as much as possible.

One other thing I would want more clarity on is how this proposal intends to handle a means to report, track and apprehend the likes of predators and others conducting improper practices designed to exploit children. As an involved parent, this part of Mr. Obama's Technology Policy Paper has my full attention. Gone are the days where you had to be home before the street lights came on and had to check in each and every hour because you were out playing in the neighborhood. The neighborhood of now is limitless with untold millions of dark alleys where children can be drug into and become exposed to things we, as their parents hadn't encountered until much later in life.

Obama Tech Policy Paper: Diversity in Media Ownership

WhiteHouse-Tech.pngIndustries grow and contract like an inch-worm moves through its life. At this point of our own lives, Mr. Obama is concerned that the FCC has been spending more time focused on the consolidation of media outlets and communications pathways. In his view, this has done more harm than good for the small business owner or small media outlet. As local radio/television stations are consumed by these Media giants.

Encourage Diversity in Media Ownership I too am concerned with the mainstream media's monopolization of what content ends up in our lives. However, at the same time I find it interesting that this is an issue at all or that it needed to be raised in a Technology Policy Paper.

I say this because when it comes to Technology, the David to these Goliath's is the very internet itself. Music, News, Podcasts, Video almost every traditional media is being made available to every single person with a computer, microphone, keyboard or camera. The reality is, these large media giants should be scared. The only thing that separates the next block-buster sitcom from coming out of Hollywood vs. Alabama is content and determination.

What will be regulated however is how fast these Media giants begin to buy up these smaller independent content provider or intimidate them into giving up their content. Where the focus will need to be going forward is on a more serious review of the national Copyright process and procedure.

It has to be made a clear and open process to protect ones intellectual rights. That is what is really needed. This information has to be clear, concise, simple and enforced to protect those who provide the diversity this section hopes to protect.

Obama Tech Policy Paper: Ensure an Open Internet

WhiteHouse-Tech.png

"Ensure the Full and Free Exchange of Information through an Open Internet and Diverse Media Outlets"

This is the full title as written in the Technology Policy Paper released by the Obama team. As with anything else, I am sure there will be more vague terminology such as this from all of the candidates, however it does provide a vague concept to grasp onto. To assist with this, the Policy Paper actually breaks it down into 4 bullet points which i will attempt to translate into my own digestible understanding and thus also opening it up for discussion here.
Protect the Openness of the Internet In one very broad swoop, this section seems to support an "open" concept at two key layers. At first glance, it appears to address the right of free access of content provided on the internet. The second, actual access to the Internet. It is not long in reading before I quickly understood what issue this first section was attempting to address. The issue of Network Provider restrictions and controls over it's customers.

Bandwidth throttling, content filtering and the likes which have made headlines across the web appear to be making the scuttlebutt rounds in Washington. It is here that a support is laid out for keeping these major players in check. Preferential treatment of one favorable client over a lesser client by allocating more bandwidth or worst restricting content or delaying it. That might not mean much to the individual home based surfer, but to a major corporation who needs fat-pipes and faster data flowing through them, having content or data throttled down could be a make or break situation.

It is important however in terms of keeping the home pricing down to allow more individuals to bridge the digital divide and obtain access to the same information that the rest of us who are able to have on-line access at home have. In this space however, I believe competition between carriers will ensure this is kept under control to some degree.

The very last sentence addresses the real concern for the future of content on the internet and that is of free speech and innovation. Two critical areas that are more of a concern to me than whether or not the big Network Providers play fair with corporate America. I would like to know more about this section than a simple one liner provides.

Obama Tech Policy Paper: Technology and innovation for a new generation

Whitehouse-tech
With it being an election year, every pundit on the street has their opinion about the economy, the candidates, the geo-political issues. Much like the general public, politicians who are engaged in an election cycle also begin to become "concerned" or "aware" of the issues of we, the people. These points of public interest are usually addressed by these candidates in their fresh-off-the-press Policy Papers. It would seem there is a policy paper for everything.

This is going to be a blog series that will look at an area that I am well plugged into; Technology. Presidential Candidate Barack Obama has release his own Policy Paper addressing technology. I intend to read through and blog on each section. Might be able to shed some light on where a possible President will see my future going. For now, I leave you with the quote from Mr. Obama's website:

“Let us be the generation that reshapes our economy to compete in the digital age. Let's set high standards for our schools and give them the resources they need to succeed. Let's recruit a new army of teachers, and give them better pay and more support in exchange for more accountability. Let's make college more affordable, and let's invest in scientific research, and let's lay down broadband lines through the heart of inner cities and rural towns all across America.” — Barack Obama Presidential Announcement Speech in Springfield, IL 02/10/07

Dark Knight in the White House?

The Dark Knight has taken the world by storm in terms of popularity and Box Office receipts. This is obviously a clear indication that those of voting age have been spending quite a bit of time in the theater enjoying yet another episode in the trilogy that is Batman. So what do you expect to happen?

Each of the mainstream Presidential Candidates have proclaimed Batman to being one of their "All-time" favorite Comic Book characters. Does this not scream of political pandering? Do we really think either of these guys would have said the same thing 6 months ago? I really find it hard to believe. As a matter of fact, I want to know how long it took their political strategists to come up with these answers?

Hell, I would have given more credibility to it if McCain said something like Dick Tracy, Beetle Bailey or even Charlie damn Brown! Come on! At least Barack tempered it with what probably would have been his first choice of Spiderman. Or would it? Spidey has been a bit popular over the past few years as well.

I suppose in the grand scheme of things, should we really care what make-believe superhero any politician likes? Actually, I would have to be a bit concerned about the state of the union if anyone really gives 1/2 a rats ass on what superhero either of these guys likes.

If you are really going to ask such dumb ass questions of your Presidential candidates you might as well ask them if they prefer Boxers or Briefs! And you wonder why we have problems in Washington today.

Are fingers crossed for an assassination?

Continuing with the 2008 Election madness, it is no secret that everyone is trying to understand, while at the same time, eliminate the popularity of Barack Obama. This past week has seen two very clear indications that thoughts are circulating in the minds of those who have their own personal agenda's.

Beginning with the lesser of two evils, was Hillary Clinton's comments supporting her determination to remain in the Democratic Primaries through June. She was basically citing the fact that Robert Kennedy was assassinated in June of 1968 as a base for one of her arguments.

For the life of me, I cannot reasonably understand why you would use a situation like that to bolster your own desire to remain in the race. The only reason one would make a statement like that is that, like Robert Kennedy, if the lead horse in the race is somehow taken out, Obama, she would be the next in line.

I would appreciate it if someone could provide me with some positive justification from those comments as they apply to Hillary's candidacy and not some subliminal desire to hope for the assassination of Obama. If the latter is truly the deep feelings of a major political figure then we should all worry about our democracy.

As I said, this was the lesser of the two evils. Yes, it gets worse, much worse. In a recent Fox News discussion with Eric Shawn about Hillary's comments, Liz Trotta an Author, Journalist and former New York Bureau Chief for the Washington Times was brought on the air to provide comments about Hillary's very public gaff. What followed deep, personal look into the mentality of a once respected Journalist charged with enlightening the masses.

"And now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off Osama, uh Obama. Well, both, if we could."

Liz Trotta, Fox News Analyst

Trying to obviously get out of a very bad comment as fast as possible, Eric half jokingly said, "Talk about how you really feel!" and then quickly tried to bring the conversation back on track. Do you think it ended there? Oh, hell no. She followed Shawn's next question of whether or not she (Trotta) really felt that Hillary didn't think that about Obama with.
"Well, that's beside the point, whether she meant it or not."
Seriously, I think this woman has lost her mind! Anyone who follows news in general knows that Fox is known for its strong conservative slant, so Democrats usually never get a break. But this is over the top and it seems they know it.

You would expect that any normal agency would immediately dismiss her for those comments. All that has happened so far is her appearance on Fox News again with Bill Hemmer and offered an apology writing it all of to a bad attempt at humor. Lets see how funny it is with the Secret Service crawling up her ass after comments about hoping for an Assassination.

I am going to leave that comment speak for itself. The one thing I will say is that at least she had the balls to say what she was thinking. I am more frightened by Hillary's comments as they are hints to much deeper potential concern if true. This leads me to think about all of the pipe dream comments of Hillary accepting the Vice Presidency lets get serious here, if she does, Obama will need to watch his back once she is one roadblock from the Oval office. The more likely VP nod? John Edwards.

Despite all of this ignorance, I will say however, Barack is taking this all extremely well and should be commended for his public restraint. But I would love to be a fly on the wall of his inner sanctum to hear the conversations about these two.

HOPE.ACT.CHANGE

The body of this post is about the future. Not simply the future now, but that of our children and grand children. It is time, to stand up, let your voices be heard. There is an effort underway to collect the voices of the masses to take back what we want the future to be. It is time for us all to HOPE.ACT.CHANGE.

For me personally that is the future of my children. We can no longer stand by and believe that those in power will do what is right for us. That trust which could be taken has never been given. We have been sleeping. Look at what people are doing in music and voice. Dipdive has become the true "Melting Pot" collecting the voice of "We the REAL people."
