Kid in Glider

The Cadets of the Walter M Schirra squadron took flight at Farmer’s Pride Airport near Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania. This activity allows the cadets to experience the wonder that is powerless flight in a glider. Gliding is a form of aviation where the aircraft has no engine and relies on gravity and air currents to stay aloft. For young people interested in aviation, the gliding experience can be particularly rewarding.

Aerospace Education

Many organizations provide opportunities for young people to learn about gliding. Ours is through the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). As part of CAPs Aerospace Education Program, cadets are offered Orientation, or “O-flights” to experience both Gliders and Powered Aircraft.  The amazing thing is these cadets’ range in age from 12 to 20 years old.

The cadet glider program provides a unique opportunity for young people to experience the thrill of flying without the noise and vibration of an engine. Cadets receive ground school instruction and hands-on experience in the glider cockpit. They learn about aerodynamics, navigation, and weather, and work towards earning their glider pilot’s license.  And depending on the CAP adult pilot, some weightlessness as the glider dips and rises in the thermals.

Leadership & Careers

The glider program also provides a valuable opportunity for young people to develop leadership skills. Cadets learn to work as a team, communicate effectively, and take on responsibility as they progress through the program. The experience gained in the cadet glider program can be a valuable addition to a young person’s resume and college applications.

In addition to the personal benefits of the cadet glider program, there are also potential career benefits. Many pilots begin their aviation careers in gliders, and the experience gained in the cadet glider program can be a steppingstone to a career in aviation.

If you are a young person interested in aviation, consider exploring the world of gliding or Aerospace in Civil Air Patrol as It provides a safe and structured environment to learn about gliding and an asset as you pursue your passion for aviation.
