Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a volunteer organization that has been serving the United States for over 80 years. One of the most exciting programs they offer is Aerospace Eduction.  There are so many learning opportunities within this program, but the most obvious is the science of Flight.

Few kids are able to experience flight outside of family travel, if at all.  Civil Air Patrol offers youth to fully experience the science of flight by putting them in the “front-seat” thanks to Orientation Flights.  These activities, come in two forms; Glider and Powered giving kids the opportunity to experience flying firsthand.

The benefits are immeasurable to young minds.  Here are just a few of them that combined help mature and grow our youth into future leaders and in some cases solid pilots and astronauts.

Inspiring Future Aviators

Orientation Flights can be a life-changing experiences for kids who have an interest in aviation. They get to sit in the cockpit of a plane and experience what it’s like to be a pilot. Many kids who participate in Orientation Flights end up pursuing careers in aviation, whether it’s becoming a pilot, air traffic controller, or working in the aerospace industry. The experience can also inspire an interest in STEM fields, as it requires a lot of technical knowledge and problem-solving skills.

Developing Confidence and Self-Esteem

Flying in an airplane can be a nerve-wracking experience for some people, especially if it’s their first time. However, when kids participate in Orientation Flights, they are given the opportunity to overcome their fears and gain confidence. The experience can help them develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments, which can boost their self-esteem and overall confidence.

Learning About Aviation History and Principles

Orientation Flights are not just about the experience of flying. Kids also have the opportunity to learn about the history of aviation and the principles that make flying possible. They can learn about the Wright brothers and other pioneers of aviation, as well as the science and math behind flight. This knowledge can inspire a passion for aviation and motivate kids to learn more about the subject.

Encouraging Physical Activity and Outdoor Exploration

Orientation Flights are typically held at airports, which provide an opportunity for kids to explore the outdoors and get some exercise. They may have the chance to walk around the airport and see other planes, or even participate in other physical activities such as hiking or biking. This can encourage kids to get outside and be more active, which is important for their physical and mental health.

Building Social Skills and Teamwork

Orientation Flights are often conducted in groups, which gives kids the opportunity to interact with others who share their interests. They can build social skills and learn how to work as a team to achieve a common goal. This can be especially beneficial for kids who may struggle with social situations or making friends.
