The Sad State of Social Media

In contrast, this post delves into the pervasive phenomenon of echo chambers prevalent on social media platforms. As an occasional user of social media, I have contemplated the reasons behind my limited commitment.

Consider the example of X, a platform I have been a part of since its inception. Initially, I engaged with creators as I found their content to be informative, entertaining, or thought-provoking. A small group of individuals regularly connected with me, fostering a sense of community.

However, as social media expanded and new services were introduced, the landscape underwent a transformation. These companies, driven by profit motives, lost sight of their original purpose. Their focus shifted from creating a community to accumulating wealth.

To maintain relevance, they introduced novel technologies, often devoid of community-centric considerations. Bots, advertisements, and algorithms were manipulated to maximize revenue generation. While it is understandable that capitalism emphasizes financial success, the current trajectory has deviated from a balanced approach.

Social media platforms now prioritize clicks, views, and numerical metrics, disregarding the well-being of users. This emphasis on quantity over quality has led to a situation where millions of individuals with valuable skills and knowledge struggle to make a living and share their ideas.

It is intriguing to reflect on the journey that led us to this point and its implications for those who innovate in alternative ways. The emergence of this “new social world order” has come at the expense of community, a concept that cannot be ignored.

Embracing and valuing diverse cultures, histories, and groups of people does not generate financial gain. These elements are crafted to identify and highlight differences or triggers that evoke emotional responses and generate reactions, ultimately increasing clicks and comments. Furthermore, the constant bickering between various factions serves as a distraction from the greater issues at hand.

This strategy employed by social platforms to maximize their own interests is evident, and I firmly believe that algorithms will persist in manipulating individuals’ emotions, primarily for the purpose of garnering more views and clicks. As a mature society, humanity may not yet be fully prepared to embrace the benefits of algorithms and innovations that override our rational thinking and common sense. However, there remains a glimmer of hope.

Increasingly, rational individuals are weary of the constant anxiety, drama, and emotionally manipulative technologies that plague our lives. They are recognizing the need for meaningful conversations and interactions that are not driven by greed. To foster open-mindedness and avoid reacting impulsively to others, platforms like Mastodon and Discord empower individuals to reclaim control of the conversation and establish communities of like-minded individuals who are disillusioned with the pervasive noise.
