The Cadets of the Walter M. Schirra Squadron embarked on an exhilarating flight at Farmer’s Pride Airport, situated near Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania. This activity provides cadets with an unparalleled opportunity to experience the awe-inspiring sensation of soaring through the skies without the assistance of an engine. Gliding, a discipline within aviation, entails the utilization of gravity and air currents to maintain altitude, rendering it an especially captivating experience for young individuals with an avian passion.

Aerospace Education
Numerous organizations offer opportunities for young individuals to gain knowledge about gliding. Our organization, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), provides these opportunities through its Aerospace Education Program. As part of this program, cadets are offered Orientation, or “O-flights,” which allow them to experience both gliders and powered aircraft. Notably, the cadets participating in this program range in age from 12 to 20 years old.
The cadet glider program presents a unique opportunity for young people to experience the exhilaration of flight without the noise and vibration associated with an engine. Cadets receive ground school instruction and practical experience in the glider cockpit. They acquire knowledge in aerodynamics, navigation, and weather conditions, and strive to earn their glider pilot’s license. Additionally, depending on the CAP adult pilot, cadets may experience weightlessness as the glider ascends and descends within thermals.
Leadership & Careers
The cadet glider program offers a valuable opportunity for young individuals to develop essential leadership skills. Through teamwork, effective communication, and progressive responsibility, cadets gain valuable experience that can significantly enhance their resumes and college applications.
Beyond personal benefits, the cadet glider program presents potential career advantages. Many pilots commence their aviation careers in gliders, and the experience acquired through this program serves as a valuable stepping stone to a successful career in aviation.
If you are a young person passionate about aviation, consider exploring the realm of gliding or Aerospace in Civil Air Patrol. This organization provides a safe and structured environment to learn about gliding, and it can serve as an asset as you pursue your aviation aspirations.
