I am a veteran who served from the 1985 to 1993. I have witnessed how the military is often perceived as separate from the corporate world. However, the military actually serves as an exceptional training ground for leadership development.

From High School to Parris Island, South Carolina at 17. I was thrust into a position of leadership early on. Taking charge of a Field Wire team in Artillery as the senior Lance Corporal at 18. I began to understand quickly that I was responsible for the well-being and safety of those junior to me. This intense training ground, taught me the responsibility and burden for others. Despite the fact that I could not rent a car or other benefits available to adults. Over the next 7 years, I learned hands-on, how to be an effective leader in a very dynamic environment.
These are embedded skills that become the core of who who we are, regardless of the environment we operate in. As I transitioned out of the Military into the civilian workforce, I continued to find and support my fellow Veterans.
Why? First we are taught the skill of Follower-ship. How to take directives from those above us and execute effectively. I have often said “I won’t ask anything of my team that I couldn’t or wouldn’t do myself. I have never been a “Don’t do as I do, do as I say” people leader. I always try to lead from the front.
Additionally, Veterans are taught a diverse range of skills that make us highly effective leaders. From decision-making, to resilience and teamwork, military experience molds individuals to excel in high-stress environments and deliver tangible outcomes.
Decisiveness Under Pressure
Military leaders are trained to make critical decisions swiftly, often with limited information. More now than ever, executives and managers face similar challenges—responding to market fluctuations, managing crises, or navigating organizational transformations. The ability to assess situations rapidly and take decisive action is a defining characteristic of military-trained leaders.
Adaptability and Problem-Solving
No mission ever unfolds precisely as planned. Military personnel are adept at adjusting to changing circumstances and finding solutions spontaneously. This adaptability is invaluable, where disruptions—economic downturns, technological advancements, or unforeseen challenges—require leaders who can pivot and innovate effectively.
Team-Oriented Leadership
The military instills a profound understanding that success is a collective endeavor. Leaders learn to motivate diverse groups regardless of background or status. We delegate effectively, and ensure that every team member understands their role. In corporate settings, this translates into robust team management, collaboration, and the capacity to inspire employees toward a shared objective.
Accountability and Integrity
In the military, accountability is paramount—leaders are accountable for their actions and those of their teams. This sense of ownership and integrity fosters trust and credibility, positioning military-trained leaders as exceptional assets to any organization.
Resilience and Mental Toughness
Military service instills perseverance in the face of adversity. Whether it involves rigorous training, managing high-stakes projects, or navigating uncertainty. Veterans develop a level of mental toughness that proves invaluable in corporate environments. We do not evade challenges; rather, they confront them head-on.
Strategic Vision and Execution
Finally, the ability to perceive broader context, while ensuring execution is a hallmark of military leadership. Veterans embody this strategic mindset, assisting organizations in contributing to long-term objectives while effectively managing short-term operations.
Leadership transcends authority; it encompasses vision, integrity, adaptability, and the ability to unite individuals toward a shared objective. Veterans possess these qualities in abundance, making them indispensable assets in the corporate world.
Businesses that embrace Veterans and the benefits they bring to the table, gain from the experience that Veterans offer.
